Hampton Beach Merchants Report a Steady, if Unspectacular, Season

Business owners along Hampton Beach's oceanfront strip describe this summer as steady but unspectacular, with weekend crowds remaining reliably strong while weekday visitor traffic has noticeably softened compared to the peak years immediately following the pandemic, when day-trip tourism to New England beaches surged.

Restaurant and arcade operators say the shift has forced some adjustment to staffing models, with fewer businesses opening for full weekday hours early and late in the season compared to a few years ago. Several longtime operators describe the pattern as a return to something closer to pre-pandemic norms rather than a sign of genuine decline in the area's appeal.

Town officials point to continued investment in the beach's public infrastructure, including boardwalk and seawall maintenance, as evidence of confidence in the district's long-term prospects, even as individual business owners navigate a more seasonally uneven year than the unusually strong summers of recent memory.
