State Regulators Step Up Nail Salon Sanitation Inspections

State cosmetology regulators have issued updated enforcement guidance for nail salon inspections, tightening expectations around tool sterilization procedures and ventilation standards after consumer advocates spent several years pushing for clearer, more consistently enforced rules across the industry.

Salon owners who support the update say clearer standards benefit responsible operators by leveling the playing field against competitors who cut corners on sanitation to reduce costs. Industry association representatives note that most New Hampshire salons already meet or exceed the updated requirements, but say inconsistent past enforcement had allowed a minority of operators to operate well below acceptable standards without meaningful consequence.

What Customers Should Look For

Consumer advocates recommend customers watch for basic signs of proper sanitation on any visit: tools stored in sealed, labeled sterilization pouches rather than loose in a drawer, foot baths with disposable liners changed between clients, and staff willing to answer questions about sterilization procedures without hesitation. Advocates say a salon's willingness to discuss its practices openly is often as telling as the practices themselves.

The state board says it will conduct unannounced inspections at a higher rate than in previous years and will publish inspection results in a format intended to be more accessible to consumers researching salons before booking an appointment.
