Volunteer rescue teams say rising hiker traffic and underprepared visitors are straining an already stretched system.

Search and Rescue Teams Brace for a Busy White Mountains Season

Volunteer search and rescue teams across the White Mountains say they are bracing for another demanding season, as hiker traffic on popular routes like the Presidential Range continues to climb faster than the volunteer base that responds to emergencies there. Fish and Game officials confirm rescue call volume has trended upward for several consecutive years.

Rescue coordinators describe a recurring pattern in the incidents that consume the most resources: hikers underestimating how quickly conditions can change above treeline, often setting out in summer clothing without accounting for the exposure and temperature swings common at higher elevations even in warmer months. Cell service gaps in much of the range complicate both initial distress calls and coordination once a rescue is underway.

A Strained Volunteer Base

Nearly all technical rescue capacity in the White Mountains relies on volunteers who train extensively but receive only partial compensation for the physically demanding, sometimes multi-day missions required to reach injured hikers in remote terrain. Team leaders say recruitment has not kept pace with call volume, a gap they attribute partly to the difficulty of finding volunteers willing to commit to the required training given the region's broader workforce and housing pressures.

State officials continue to encourage hikers to file trip plans and carry appropriate gear, noting that New Hampshire law allows Fish and Game to bill hikers found negligent for the cost of their rescue, though officials say the policy is intended as a deterrent rather than a primary funding mechanism.
