Keene's Small Wellness Businesses Lean on Community Ties

Independent wellness practitioners in Keene, from massage therapists to acupuncturists, say word-of-mouth referrals within a tightly connected community remain their most reliable source of new clients, more so than any paid advertising or social media strategy they have tried.

Several practitioners describe deliberately keeping their client rosters at a scale they can manage personally, prioritizing consistency and relationship over rapid growth, a business philosophy they say fits both the character of the Monadnock Region and the realities of running a service business that depends heavily on trust.

Local business groups say this cluster of small wellness providers has become an underappreciated part of Keene's downtown economy, one that draws steady local traffic even during shoulder seasons when tourism-dependent businesses in town see slower periods. Providers say the biggest ongoing challenge is less finding clients than finding affordable commercial space as downtown rents have crept upward.
