Laconia Massage Therapists Push for Clearer Licensing Enforcement
Licensed practitioners say unlicensed operators undercutting prices are hurting the profession's reputation and their livelihoods.
Licensed massage therapists in the Laconia area say a small number of unlicensed operators, advertising informally and charging significantly less than trained professionals, are undercutting the profession's pricing and, in some cases, damaging its reputation when customers have negative experiences with untrained providers.
Professional associations say the issue tends to spike seasonally, as Lakes Region tourism brings a wave of temporary demand that some unlicensed operators attempt to capture with minimal oversight. Licensed therapists argue that the training and continuing education required for state licensure exists specifically to protect clients from injury, particularly for clients with underlying health conditions that require modified treatment approaches.
State licensing officials say enforcement resources are limited relative to the scale of the informal service economy, but note that consumers can verify a therapist's license status through the state's public licensing lookup system before booking, a step advocates say remains underused despite being freely available.
